Arthritis and Acupuncture

What is arthritis?

It is an inflammation of the joint that results in pain, swelling, and in some cases stiffness and difficulty in movements of the joints. Rarely, joints can be so inflamed and stiff that joint function is so limited, that the individual can become crippled. In addition, there are many types of arthritis such as osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and traumatic arthritis, which have implications for disease progression and management options.

Acupuncture and Arthritis

There is strong clinical research evidence in support of the efficacy of acupuncture in the treatment of arthritis. Acupuncture plays a role in helping to reduce pain, swelling, and stiffness of the inflamed joints. Repeated sessions of acupuncture, with or without electrical stimulation, are the most effective ways of treating arthritis with acupuncture. This has been  confirmed by many research studies such as http://aim.bmj.com/content/24/supplement/40?utm_source=TrendMD&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=Acupunct_Med_TrendMD-0

Discuss the treatment options with your doctor

When you start acupuncture for arthritis treatment, ask your treating doctor about treatment details, length of treatment, and other treatment options such as physiotherapy and herbal medicine.
