Memory Loss

The extent of the problem

Memory loss is a very common disorder that affects about 35.6 million people all over the world (2010 statistics) and that number could double in 2020. Estimates in Canada showed  that as high as 340,000 Canadians were living with cognitive impairment and memory loss in 2011, however, this number jumped to 747,000 (almost doubled) in 2012 ( Source, Statistics Canada https://www150.statcan.gc.ca/n1/pub/82-003-x/2016005/article/14613-eng.htm )

But what are reasons behind memory loss?

Memory loss can be caused by many factors that range from organic (i.e. disease) process to just a symptom of stress and anxiety. The most common reasons for memory loss are excessive smoking and alcohol use, sleep deprivation, or low-quality sleep, depression, anxiety and stress, nutritional deficiencies, head injuries and concussion, stroke, and Alzheimer’s disease.

How to identify the cause of memory loss?

To know why you have memory loss you need to consult your doctor who will take a complete medical history from you, ask you some questions and maybe do some tests to know if you have memory loss or not and whether you need to do some testing to know the reason.

Treatment of memory loss, naturopathic Medicine perspectives

From the naturopathic medicine viewpoint, treating memory loss is treating the root cause of the problem. So, identifying treatable causes of memory loss such as excessive smoking, alcohol intake, anxiety, or depression, can facilitate the treatment of memory loss. Sometimes, there is no specific reason why memory loss has happened, in this case, the naturopathic doctor will work on correcting the basic levels of health such as ensuring adequate nutrition, fluid intake, and vitamins and minerals supplementation. In many cases, drastic hormonal changes such as going through menopause can be a reason for memory loss. Hormone replacement therapy can help women in their menopause who start to develop memory loss. Hormone replacement therapy by naturopathic doctors does not include synthetic female hormones such as Estrogen and Progesterone, rather than using plant-derived hormone-like substances called Bioidentical Hormone replacement therapy with literally no toxicity or side effects seen after use.

Other reasons for memory loss such as stress and anxiety can be solved in naturopathic medicine by addressing the root cause of the problem such as reducing the feeling of stress by cognitive behavioral therapy and lowering the stress levels by using herbs and supplements that calm the mind such as  Kava Kava and Passionflower.
