Eczema and Psoriasis

Posted Jan 14th, 2023 in Naturopathic Medicine, News, Tips

Eczema and Psoriasis are the two most common skin conditions in Ontario and Canada.

Eczema is a chronic allergic problem of the skin that usually presents with skin itchiness, dryness, and thickening. Eczema happens in all ages even for young children.

There are many causes of eczema such as food allergies, contact with certain metals or chemicals, certain clothes, and sometimes from stress and anxiety.

The eczema symptoms (such as itchiness and skin thickening) can be triggered by exposure to the allergen or contact with hot water. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/NBK538209/

Psoriasis is a chronic inflammatory skin condition that is often seen in the fall or winter season and is characterized by severe itchiness,  silver/whitish skin eruption, skin scaling, and bleeding spots after itchiness.

Psoriasis can run in families as well. If psoriasis is left untreated for many years, it can result in serious health issues such as psoriatic arthritis. https://www.aad.org/public/diseases/psoriasis/what/symptoms

Skin Health can be maintained by proper nutrition, avoidance of any triggers that may provoke allergies or hypersensitivities, and proper supplementation with vitamins, minerals, and herbals to support the skin metabolism and maintain its luster and function.

Can Naturopathic Medicine help with Eczema/ Psoriasis care?

The Answer is Yes

This is achieved by many means such as looking for the root cause(s) of your problem such as the main triggers that can be the main reason for flareups, also addressing the immune system as both of these skin conditions are diagnosed under (autoimmune diseases), so an imbalance of the immune system can be the underlying factor that results in the immune system fighting its own body (the skin in this case).   In many cases, food sensitivities or intolerances can play a role in the aggravation and flare-ups of both eczema and psoriasis, so addressing the food sensitivities can be a real game changer for these patients.

Food sensitivities can be tested by many means such as implementing an elimination diet or doing a blood test (IGg food sensitivity test), and in many cases, these tests showed a sensitivity/intolerance to more than one food item even if it is a healthy food. By eliminating the food triggers the sensitivities to food will be mitigated and in some cases, it can be totally recovered.

Eczema and Psoriasis are considered inflammatory skin conditions, so by addressing the inflammation with many means that include but are not exclusive to proper diet, lifestyle changes, and vitamins and minerals, a marked improvement in the inflammation process can be achieved which helps improve the symptoms and signs of eczema/psoriasis.
