Hormonal Imbalance in Women and Low Iron

Posted Sep 17th, 2026 in Naturopathic Medicine, News, Tips

Many people don’t know that hormonal imbalances in women can be an indirect reason for low iron and may be anemia as well.

This article will focus on Hormonal Imbalance in Women and Low Iron.

The primary female hormones are known as Estrogen and Progesterone. They govern many aspects of a woman’s physiology, including but not limited to her periods (regularity and flow), physical and mental development (body weight, muscle development, fat distribution, mental focus, and clarity), and emotional state and sleep physiology.

These hormones may become imbalanced during one or more stages of the woman's reproductive age or even during peri- or postmenopausal periods.

If these hormones fall outside their normal physiological range (whether too high or too low), all or most of the previously mentioned bodily functions can be disrupted.

One of the most common changes if these hormones lose balance is period irregularities with subsequent loss of an extra amount of blood. If this happens over years, this will mostly result in low iron and anemia.

One of the recent articles (Munro M et al. 2023 https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/36706856/   highlighted these changes for women with irregular periods.

In Naturopathic Medicine, looking at the root cause(s) of the problem always helps to address these issues on the basis of improving the hormonal balance and also correcting the drop of iron that can cause several symptoms such as fatigue, low physical and mental performance, hair fall, and sometimes low mood.

Also, dietary changes may help in this regard, with an emphasis on whole foods, fresh greens and fruits, and avoiding processed foods and foods with preservatives or food colorants.
